Description
Length 16.5",  Wingspan 28",  This diving Duck's wings are broad, short, pointed and dark - White rump - small bill - Adult female spring plumage has white facial mask, in winter white face with dark cheek patch - Male spring black head with large white area around eye, black neck and chest. Very long black tail - Male in winter,  head , neck and breast are white with tan around eye and darker patch just below.   Male's bill is black at base then gold with a black tip.Male also has light eye.   Nests on shallow tundra ponds, winters  on shallow waters in small groups.
