1., 2. Last Instar #5 on Wavy-leaf or Gray Thistle - Circium undulatum, dorsal and lateral
3., 4.  # 4 last instar  easily negotiating its way through  the spines of Circium undulatum.

This #1  4th instar  was located
May 27 2008 on Mallow neglecta in Draper, Salt Lake County, Utah.  Photo taken May 30th.  Lucky for him that we found him since the city mowed down his food supply the next week.

A  Painted Lady oviposited on a Meadow Sage - Salvia superba plant in our garden on May 18, 2008. The egg hatched on May 21st and was placed on Salvia.

#2 New  fifth instar  June 13th.
This larva fed on Salvia superba until a few days after it molted to 5th instar. It then stopped eating and was unable to pupate.
