Characteristics
This shrub is 3
to 9 feet tall, twigs are 4-sided. The 2 to 4 inch long leaves
are opposite, lance shaped and hairy. The yellow, tubular flowers are
in opposite pairs in the leaf axils cupped by 1/2 inch to 1 inch green
to purplish bracts. Bloom time is from July to September. The shiny,
purple-black berries are also in pairs and have a bad taste. These
shrubs grow in wet soil in forests, clearings, riverbanks and
thickets. Distinguishable from non-flowering specimens of other
Lonicera by its squared stem and sharply pointed leaves.
